Dedicated to journaling our work mission trip to Costa Rica sponsored by the Iowa Conference Volunteers in Mission of the United Methodist Church. A place for us to share our excitement, prayers, anticipation, and anything else God puts on our hearts.
Continue praying for the team, for the people with whom we will work, play and worship with in Costa Rica, safe travels and for those we leave at home. God goes before us and will walk with us!

Day 6 VBS Painting Crew Children's Feeding Program

Thur. Jan. 10 VBS, Painting and Children’s Feeding Program To being the day we painted at the orphanage. The painting involves pulling weeds, scraping old paint, cleaning down the spider webs and scraping the algae and mold off of the buildings.

During this time there are always children who come to greet us. We know several names and they are learning ours. Glen took extra time with them and they flock to him. Today he was on a swing swinging kids.. We see the bracelets and angel necklaces being worn. Two little ones are dressed the same and I recognize them from VBS. They let me play a game of hopscotch and giggled at my mistakes. I took a picture and the kids love seeing themselves. It is heart rendering to know that their young lives have faced tragic circumstances. We observe a few negative behavior which shows their anger deep inside from what they have faced. It is also quite amazing to see how many welcome us with open arms. They do steal our hearts. Early this morning when I awoke, God brought their faces and names to me.

At 11 AM we boarded the van for VBS at the Los Guidos Methodist Church. Yesterday we were amazed at the number of children and their singing. It took 1 hour to travel with the road construction. We arrived in time to help feed around 45 kids. They had chicken foot soup which smelled delicious. Before the meal Pastor Edgar prayed and the kids repeated the prayer after him. We then passed out the bowls—no drink today. In short order the kids finished and brought the bowls to the sink. Their toothbrushes are in cups on a shelf in the room. Several want to hang around until VBS begins but Pastor sends them on their way to return at 2 PM. We cleaned tables, benches and sweep the floor. A young girl mops it. It is obvious that she knows how to handle a mop.

In VBS They begin together as a group singing outside. They know the songs and have many motions. The group lines up by ages and we lead them in to their separate classrooms. Each group has a planned lesson and crafts. My group of 25 preschoolers, sings “Jesus Loves Me” by signing, in fact, they do the signs to remind me that we learned the day before. They are so still and concentrate carefully. We have a lesson about God’s love. The parents of 2 come to help. They cannot speak English but are quite willing to help with each little group. As a child completes the project, they are eager to show what they have doing.

Several wear the angel necklaces and bracelets made Wed. They give hugs easily and are so serious when telling me something. Pastor Edgar walkes through to give us any support that we need. He does so much for his congregation and beyond. It is obvious that they love and respect him. We had about 70 kids and my room had no light except for the glowing light from the children's radiant faces. It was a challenge to find a dropped crayon. I could not have gotten along without Terry, our interpreter. She is 16 yrs. old and has been with us each day. Nancy D
